While people are often well aware when they have been feeling down or off, at times it can be difficult to identify the source of these feelings. You may be wondering if your painful emotions are a sign you have depression. Listed below are 10 symptoms of depression that can help you determine if you may be experiencing this mental illness.
You feel depressed for most of the day, almost every day
You no longer enjoy the things you used to
Your weight and/or diet has changed noticeably
Your sleeping pattern has changed
Others have noticed you seem more agitated or subdued than usual
You don’t have as much energy as you used to
Your self-esteem has decreased and/or you often feel guilt about things that aren’t entirely your fault
You struggle to concentrate and make decisions
You have thoughts of suicide
It has become harder to interact with others and/or complete work
At times other mental illnesses or life events (such as the death of someone you love) can lead people to experience many of these same signs; it can be helpful to talk with a mental health professional or primary care physician to rule out other causes of these symptoms. Thankfully there are very effective treatments for depression. A mental health professional or primary care physician should be able to provide you with the support you need or connect you with someone who can.
